Rare Scaly Thrush Sighting in Telangana: A Historic First for South India!

Scaly Thrush Sighted in Telangana

Scaly Thrush: 444th Bird in Telangana Sighted at Bheemuni Padam Waterfalls

Scaly Thrush, a winter migrant bird from the Himalayas and North Eastern States, has appeared in Telangana. Bird watchers spotted it for the first time at Bheemuni Padam waterfalls, located in the Guduru reserve forest of Mahabubabad district. As a result, this sighting adds a new species to the region’s rich avian diversity.

Additionally, experts believe this is the first sighting of the bird in South India. However, bird watchers are still reviewing the data to confirm this exciting claim. Sriram Reddy, a seasoned birder, spotted the bird during a two-day trip to the area.

Scaly Thrush migrates south in winter to escape the harsh weather of the Himalayas. Typically, the bird makes brief stops in Telangana along its journey. While in the forest, Reddy noticed the bird moving under bamboo trees. Interestingly, he observed differences when compared to other thrush species he had seen earlier in the state. This led him to suspect that he had encountered a rare species.

After consulting with experts and comparing photographs, Reddy confirmed the sighting of a new species. Consequently, this discovery expands Telangana’s growing list of avian sightings. Notably, just six months ago, bird watchers spotted a Pied Thrush in the same location, marking its second sighting in the region.

This exciting discovery strengthens Telangana’s reputation as a premier birdwatching destination. Therefore, the state continues to attract bird enthusiasts with its increasing diversity of both migratory and native species.
