HMPV Cases in Nagpur: India’s Total Rises to 7

Nagpur, January 7, 2025: Two HMPV Cases in Nagpur Two children, aged 7 and 14, have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Nagpur, Maharashtra. They were taken to a private hospital in the Ramdaspeth area with fever and cough, and subsequent tests confirmed the infection.

With these cases, India’s total HMPV count has risen to seven, including reports from Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. HMPV, a respiratory illness similar to COVID-19, causes symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and runny nose.


HMPV in India: Statewise Cases

  • Maharashtra: 2 (Nagpur)
  • Gujarat: 1 (Ahmedabad – a 2-month-old infant)
  • Karnataka: 2 (Bengaluru)
  • Tamil Nadu: 2

The Maharashtra health department is on high alert as neighboring states like Gujarat and Karnataka have also reported cases.


Government Action and Advice

Union Health Minister JP Nadda assured the public that HMPV is not a new virus and has been globally recognized since 2001. He confirmed that the government is actively monitoring the situation.

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra emphasized the need for awareness campaigns and strengthened surveillance of respiratory illnesses across states.


Precautions Against HMPV

Health authorities have advised people with symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat to:

  1. Wear masks in public.
  2. Avoid crowded areas.
  3. Practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing.
  4. Seek medical care promptly if symptoms worsen.

The Maharashtra government has urged residents to stay calm and promised to issue detailed guidelines soon.
