AP Launches Green Hydrogen Plant to Propel Clean Energy Future

Green Hydrogen Revolution in Andhra Pradesh: A Step Towards a Sustainable Future. The Green Hydrogen Revolution in Andhra Pradesh is gaining momentum as Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu virtually inaugurated Hero Future Energies’ (HFE) groundbreaking Green Hydrogen plant at Rockman Industries in Tirupati. This significant development underscores Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to becoming a leader in India’s clean energy landscape. The Chief Minister expressed pride in this initiative, stating, “This project marks another step towards our state’s clean energy future, leveraging our abundant renewable resources and growing industrial demand.”

Andhra Pradesh’s Commitment to Clean Energy

The Chief Minister emphasized the state’s resolve to lead India’s green energy revolution, aligning with the ambitious Swarnandhra Vision 2047. This vision aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a global hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen production. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the state is contributing to India’s goal of achieving Net-Zero emissions by 2070, thus enhancing energy security and minimizing crude oil imports.

The Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, introduced in October 2024, outlines a comprehensive strategy to add over 160 GW of renewable energy capacity. This policy is expected to attract investments worth approximately Rs 10 trillion (about $118.95 billion) over the next five years. Notably, it prioritizes green hydrogen production, electrolyser manufacturing, and the development of infrastructure for hydrogen-powered mobility.

Infrastructure and Potential for Green Hydrogen

With its vast coastal advantages, deep-sea ports, and a robust logistics network, Andhra Pradesh is uniquely positioned to become a hub for green hydrogen exports. The successful demonstration of hydrogen blending at Rockman Industries is only the beginning. The Chief Minister assured investors that the state will continue to support clean energy projects, paving the way for a prosperous and greener future.

The newly inaugurated plant integrates green hydrogen blending with PNG/LPG for industrial furnace applications, significantly reducing carbon emissions. This scalable model in Tirupati can potentially be replicated across other hard-to-abate industries in both Andhra Pradesh and nationwide.

Equipped with a 300 kW PEM electrolyser powered by a 1.1 MWp rooftop solar plant, the facility blends 8-10% hydrogen with LPG and 3% with PNG. This Rs 1,000 crore investment creates jobs for 2,000 workers and produces 25 TPA of green hydrogen, which can expand to 54 TPA. This process effectively reduces 206 TPA of CO₂ emissions annually while releasing 190-195 TPA of oxygen into the atmosphere, marking an 8-10% reduction in CO₂ emissions.

Future Prospects and Investment Opportunities

Rahul Munjal, Founder CMD of Hero Future Energies, highlighted the project’s crucial role in industrial decarbonization. He noted that the innovative blending of green hydrogen with LNG offers industries a new pathway to reduce emissions. Ujjwal Munjal, Managing Director of Rockman Industries, expressed pride in hosting this landmark initiative, reinforcing their commitment to eco-friendly innovation in the automotive components sector.

The virtual inauguration ceremony, held from Amaravati, saw the participation of key dignitaries, including Chief Secretary K Vijayanand and Industries Secretary Dr. N Yuvaraj, along with executives from Hero Future Energies and Rockman Industries at the plant in Pagali.
