Stalin Urges Modi to Base Delimitation on 1971 Population

Demand for 1971 Population Basis in Parliamentary Delimitation.CHENNAI: The demand for 1971 population basis in parliamentary delimitation was a key focus during the all-party meeting led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday. The meeting aimed to address the upcoming 2026 delimitation of parliamentary seats. Chief Minister Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the 1971 population figures remain the foundation for delimitation for another 30 years, extending until 2056.

Stalin emphasized that maintaining the 1971 basis for delimitation would encourage all states in India to adopt effective population control measures, similar to those implemented by the southern states. He reminded attendees that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had made a commitment in Parliament in 2000, stating that the 1971 population figures would continue to guide delimitation efforts.

Importance of the 1971 Population Basis

The demand for 1971 population basis in parliamentary delimitation is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it ensures that states like Tamil Nadu maintain their fair representation in Parliament. If the delimitation is based on the 1971 population, it will help retain the current proportion of representatives from Southern states, which is crucial for their voices to be heard at the national level.

During the all-party meeting, various political representatives shared their perspectives on the resolutions proposed by Stalin. While the meeting was still ongoing at 12:30 PM, the demand to introduce necessary constitutional amendments was also highlighted. These amendments would ensure that the current representation of South Indian states in both houses of Parliament remains intact, especially if parliamentary constituencies are increased based on the 1971 population.

The resolutions put forth by Chief Minister Stalin are being viewed as the minimum requirements for Tamil Nadu. They reflect the state’s commitment to equitable representation and population control measures.
