The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has officially condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s anti-Sikh remarks made in Parliament. SGPC Condemns These comments, perceived as derogatory, occurred during a recent address where Shah suggested that individuals in Punjab aim to emulate the late Khalistani militant Bhindranwale while reciting the Guru Granth Sahib from an Assam jail. This indirect reference to jailed Punjab leader Amritpal Singh has sparked outrage within the Sikh community and prompted the SGPC to take action.
Blatant Anti-Sikh Prejudice
During its general house meeting, the SGPC characterized Shah’s remarks as a blatant manifestation of anti-Sikh prejudice. The committee described these comments as an affront to the Sikh community, stating, “Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, revered as a national martyr, sacrificed his life to safeguard the honour of Sikhism and preserve the Sikh identity.” The SGPC emphasized that such divisive rhetoric from a senior government official insults the legacy of a great leader and undermines the diverse fabric of Indian society.
The SGPC reiterated that the remarks reflect a deeply entrenched anti-Sikh mindset, which is unacceptable in a democratic society that prides itself on diversity and respect for all communities. The commitment to maintaining harmony must take precedence over divisive statements.
Disrespecting Gurbani
Furthermore, the SGPC session sharply criticized Shah’s alleged derisive comments regarding the recitation of Gurbani (Guru Granth Sahib). “Gurbani, the divine word composed by the revered Gurus, is a sacrosanct aspect of Sikhism,” noted a resolution. Presenting Gurbani negatively disrespects the core of Sikh religious practice. The committee reminded the minister that Gurbani is vital to the nation’s cultural heritage and integral to the Sikh community’s sacrifices for India’s freedom.
Call for Respect and Action
The SGPC demanded that the Central Government show genuine respect for Sikh sentiments. They urged the government to refrain from making statements that further divide the nation. Additionally, the committee passed a resolution condemning the “hateful environment being fostered against Sikhs in regions beyond Punjab.” It called for decisive action against those responsible for creating an atmosphere of hate and intolerance.
Addressing Farmers’ Struggles
The SGPC also addressed the government’s handling of the ongoing farmers’ struggle. Farmers, deemed the backbone of India’s economy, are fighting for rightful demands like guaranteed minimum support prices. Instead of addressing these issues, authorities have resorted to detaining farmers attending peaceful protests. This approach violates democratic values and reveals an anti-farmer policy detrimental to the agricultural sector.
Judicial Actions and Historical Accountability
In a positive note, the SGPC welcomed recent judicial actions taken by the Mohali court against police officials involved in false encounters with SGPC Condemns Sikh youth. This practice, which has claimed countless innocent lives since 1984, requires stringent penalties for those responsible.SGPC Condemns Anti-Sikh Remarks.
Visa Office and Quota Demands
The SGPC also advocated for the establishment of a visa office in Amritsar to facilitate Sikh devotees traveling to gurdwaras in Pakistan. There is a strong demand for visas to be issued year-round, not just during scheduled occasions.
Finally, the SGPC called for a special quota SGPC Condemns for Sikhs in the Indian Armed Forces. The Sikh community has historically made significant sacrifices for national defense. Establishing this quota would honor their contributions and strengthen their traditional role in safeguarding the country.
