SECL Launches Eco-Friendly Coal Evacuation at Dipka Megaproject

The Eco-Friendly Coal Evacuation at Dipka Megaproject has officially commenced operations, marking a significant advancement in coal transportation technology. Located in Chhattisgarh, this initiative by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) aims to enhance coal evacuation through innovative silos under the First Mile Connectivity (FMC) initiative. This project not only boosts efficiency but also aligns with environmentally friendly practices, ensuring a sustainable approach to coal distribution.

Key Features of the Dipka Megaproject

The newly operational silos, specifically Silos 3 and 4, have dramatically increased the coal evacuation capacity from 15 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to a remarkable 40 MTPA. This leap is a critical part of the ‘Dipka CHP-Silo FMC’ project, which has an annual coal evacuation capacity of 25 million tonnes. The Ministry of Coal has emphasized that this upgrade is crucial for modernizing coal transportation while maintaining safety standards.

Benefits of Eco-Friendly Coal Evacuation

The implementation of this eco-friendly coal evacuation system at the Dipka Megaproject brings numerous advantages:

  1. Improved Efficiency: The new loading systems minimize both underloading and overloading of coal in rakes, ensuring accurate loading and faster turnaround times.
  2. Enhanced Coal Quality: By reducing handling and transport-related damage, the quality of coal is preserved, benefiting end-users.
  3. Reduced Environmental Impact: The shift from road transport to a more efficient rail-based system leads to significant savings in diesel expenses and lowers carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.
  4. Increased Rake Availability: With faster loading times, the availability of rakes is improved, allowing for more consistent and reliable coal delivery.

SECL’s Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Under the PM Gatishakti Plan, SECL is dedicated to expanding its FMC infrastructure. They have initiated 17 projects with a cumulative capacity of 233 MTPA, with nine already commissioned. This commitment shows SECL’s proactive approach in modernizing coal evacuation methods while adhering to eco-friendly standards.
