Biased Investigation in Jadavpur University Ruckus. In Kolkata, a petition has been filed before a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, accusing the Kolkata Police of conducting a biased investigation in the Jadavpur University ruckus that took place on March 1. This incident left two students injured after they were allegedly struck by the vehicle of West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu. The petition raises serious concerns regarding the fairness of the ongoing investigation.
Allegations of a One-Sided Investigation
The petitioner claims that all seven FIRs filed in connection with the incident have been directed solely at the protesting students. Two of these FIRs were reportedly registered suo motu by the police, while five others were based on complaints from the Trinamool Congress-affiliated West Bengal College and University Professors Association (WBCUPA). Disturbingly, the petition asserts that not a single complaint from the injured students has been acknowledged by the police.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, presiding over the case, has admitted the petition, indicating that the allegations of a biased investigation in the Jadavpur University ruckus will be scrutinized. The case is set to be heard again on Tuesday.
Background of the Ruckus
The turmoil began when Minister Basu’s car was reportedly stopped upon entering the campus, escalating into a scuffle. The students were advocating for immediate elections for the university’s student council. They allege that as the Minister attempted to leave amid the protests, his vehicle intentionally struck two students, resulting in serious injuries that necessitated hospitalization. In the midst of this chaos, the Minister sustained minor injuries and was briefly hospitalized at the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital.
Current Situation and Response
Fortunately, reports indicate that there was no significant violence or unrest during the CPI(M)’s student wing, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), strike on Monday. This strike aimed to protest the actions taken against the two injured students. Additionally, the Uccha Madhyamik (Higher Secondary) examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education proceeded smoothly, as examination centers were kept unaffected by the protests.
