Chouhan, who had pre-booked seat number 8C, was taken aback upon discovering that the seat was “broken and sunken.” Upon questioning the airline staff, he learned that management had already been informed about the seat’s condition prior to the flight. “When I asked the flight attendants, they told me that the management had been alerted earlier about the condition of the seat and that it should not have been sold,” Chouhan noted. He further revealed that several other seats on the aircraft were also defective.

Despite offers to switch seats from fellow passengers, Chouhan chose to endure the 1.30-hour journey in the faulty seat. “I decided not to inconvenience them and would complete my journey as planned,” he said. The minister had hoped that Air India’s service would improve following its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022 for Rs 18,000 crore, but he expressed disappointment over the experience.

Cheating Passengers with Faulty Seats

Chouhan’s comments emphasized a crucial concern: “If passengers are paying the full fare, why should they be assigned defective and uncomfortable seats? Is this not cheating?” His statement reflects a growing frustration among travelers regarding air travel standards, especially as the industry recovers from the pandemic.

In light of his complaint, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu promptly reached out to Chouhan, assuring him that action would be taken. Naidu instructed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to investigate the issue and recommend immediate corrective measures.

Air India’s Response

In a public statement, Air India apologized for the inconvenience caused to Chouhan. “We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please be assured that we are looking into this matter carefully to prevent any such occurrences in the future,” the airline stated on social media.

While the Tata Group has made strides in enhancing Air India’s overall reach, issues like flight delays and worn-out seats persist. Just last month, another passenger reported being downgraded from business class to economy due to a seat reassignment for a crew member. Similarly, last year a traveler complained that the business class seat he was assigned on a flight from New Delhi to Newark was not only unclean but also worn out.
