Harish Rao Demands Control of Nagarjuna Sagar Project

Demand for Control of Nagarjuna Sagar Water Project in Telangana.Hyderabad: The demand for control of Nagarjuna Sagar Water Project in Telangana has reached a critical point. Senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao recently urged the Central government to withdraw the CRPF personnel stationed at the Nagarjuna Sagar project. He called on the state government to reclaim control over the project, especially in light of the alarming fact that the Andhra Pradesh government is diverting 10,000 cusecs of water daily.

Current Situation and Concerns

During a press conference at the Telangana Bhavan, Harish Rao expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing injustice faced by Telangana. He criticized both the Congress and BJP parties for their negligence, which he believes is damaging the irrigation and drinking water interests of the region. Rao stated, “If a political party without the knowledge of Telangana’s interest comes into power, the situation will be damaging and this is visible now.”

He emphasized that while the Andhra Pradesh government is diverting water, the Telangana government appears to be passive, merely observing this injustice. The Chief Minister and the Irrigation Minister, according to Rao, have not provided adequate responses to this critical issue.

Water Transfer and Its Implications

Rao highlighted that Andhra Pradesh’s temporary share of Krishna waters is 512 tmcft, yet 657 tmcft has already been transferred. In the last 25 days alone, 60 tmcft has been transferred, averaging two tmcft per day. This alarming trend raises serious questions about the management of water resources in the region.

“The Congress, which has not taken advantage of Telangana’s water, is a big curse on the people of Telangana,” he remarked. The BRS leader pointed to a resolution passed in the Assembly demanding the immediate withdrawal of CRPF forces from the project. Additionally, he called for Nagarjuna Sagar to be placed under Telangana’s control, advocating for the status quo to be maintained as it was previously.

Call to Action

In light of these challenges, Harish Rao urged Congress leaders to organize a dharna in front of the Jal Shakti Minister’s office to draw attention to the pressing issues surrounding water management. He also challenged Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, questioning his actions as a Central Minister regarding the ongoing water diversion by Andhra Pradesh.
