Engineering Education in Tamil: A Call for Change

RANIPET: Amid the ongoing language debate in Tamil Nadu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged Chief Minister M K Stalin to promote engineering education in Tamil. During his visit, he emphasized the importance of providing educational opportunities in the Tamil language, highlighting its vital role in preserving cultural identity.

Shah’s remarks came as he addressed the 56th Raising Day of the CISF at RTC Thakkolam, located about 70 km from Chennai. He pointed out that the Narendra Modi government has made significant strides in ensuring that aspirants can take exams in their regional languages, including Tamil. “Now the PM Narendra Modi government has ensured that the exam can be written in Tamil too,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to linguistic diversity in education.

The Importance of Tamil in Education

The call for engineering education in Tamil reflects Shah’s awareness of the local context and the aspirations of students in Tamil Nadu. Education in one’s mother tongue can enhance understanding and retention, allowing students to grasp complex concepts more effectively. By advocating for this initiative, Shah aims to address the concerns of Tamil Nadu residents regarding the perceived imposition of Hindi through the National Education Policy (NEP 2020).

Addressing the Language Row

Shah’s comments are particularly significant given the current tensions between the ruling DMK and the BJP-led Centre over language policy. The DMK has accused the central government of attempting to impose Hindi, a claim that the government has denied. This public discourse emphasizes the need for a balance between national unity and regional identity, especially in educational frameworks.

Conclusion

The push for engineering education in Tamil is more than just a political statement; it is a necessary step for empowering students in Tamil Nadu. By providing education in their native language, we can ensure that future generations are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive world.
