Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Arrested for Gold Smuggling

In a shocking turn of events, Kannada film actor Ranya Rao was arrested for gold smuggling at Bengaluru International Airport. She allegedly attempted to smuggle 14.2 kg of gold worth over Rs 12.56 crore from Dubai, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday. Arrest Details

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) acted swiftly on a tip-off, apprehending Ranya Rao upon her arrival from Dubai on an Emirates flight. Following her arrest on Monday night, she was presented before an economic offences court, where she was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. This swift action underscores the DRI’s commitment to combating gold smuggling and related illicit activities.

Suspicious Activities

DRI officials reported that the 33-year-old actress had been under surveillance due to her frequent international travels. In just 15 days, she made four trips to Dubai, raising suspicions about her activities. A targeted operation was launched upon her return, ultimately leading to her arrest.

Investigators revealed that the actress allegedly concealed gold bars in her clothing, with a significant amount hidden inside her jacket. Authorities suspect she may have attempted to exploit her connections to evade customs checks. Additionally, reports indicate that Ranya Rao contacted local police personnel to secure an escort from the airport, further complicating her case.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities are now investigating whether Ranya Rao acted alone or was part of a larger gold smuggling syndicate operating between Dubai and India. They are also probing if any law enforcement officers, including her stepfather, were aware of her activities or misled into assisting her.

In a related operation, DRI officials conducted a search at Ranya Rao’s residence in Lavelle Road, where she lives with her husband. This search led to the seizure of gold jewellery valued at Rs 2.06 crore and cash amounting to Rs 2.67 crore. Ranya Rao is currently under investigation under the Customs Act of 1962.
